Turn your chairs over, and you might notice that the fabric covering the chair is stapled in place. By removing the fabric, you've made the first step. This can be done by removing the staples, or by cutting the fabric around the staples.

Next, measure the dimensions of the chairs for the fabric to use as covering. When buying the fabric, choose a durable fabric that is relatively easy to clean. Also, make sure to leave at least an extra foot for each side of the chair. This ensures that there is enough fabric to fit over the padding and enough to be anchored to the bottom of the chair. It's better to have too much than not enough. You can always trim the excess.

Choose padding that is durable as well. Foam padding works well. Most large fabric and craft specialty shops sell padding that is especially designed for upholstery. A little extra padding is a good idea for each of the chairs as well.

After buying the supplies (don't forget to buy a staple gun and staples at the hardware store--a clerk should be able to help you find what you need), trace a pattern, using the chairs, on some good poster board. This pattern will be used to properly cut out the padding.

Using a pencil, and the pattern, trace a guide on the padding. As you cut the padding into the proper shape for placement on the chairs, it is a good idea to leave half an inch to an inch. When the fabric is pulled tight over the padding and chairs, the extra will ensure that the entire seat is covered.

Next, place the fabric, design side down, spread out on the floor. Place the padding in the middle of the fabric. Next, match the seats of the chairs to the padding. Bring up the sides, so that they are ready to be stapled to the underside of the chairs. The task can be made easier with help. Pull the fabric tight, but not so tight that there isn't any give, and staple the fabric. Trim any excess fabric.

Finally, turn the chairs right-side up and place them around the table. It looks like a fresh new room, and you did it by yourself!

It's been an interesting few years for those that follow the relationship between the electric wheelchair industry and Medicare. Fifteen years ago, chances are you never heard of electric wheelchairs. Although they have been around for longer than that, they were not readily available until the past 10 to 12 years.

That's when companies like The Scooter Store and Hoveround began to market the wheelchairs nationally in the same manor that diabetic supply companies promoted diabetic medical supplies that were Medicare covered. When these companies began their national advertising campaigns for electric wheelchairs, the demand for the equipment nearly tripled in under three years (from 1999 to 2002). The Medicare expenditures for these wheelchairs increased by a whopping $556 million over this time period.

This does not, however, mean that the increase has been a bad thing for Medicare. According to a 2005 independent study, the electric wheelchair industry actually saves Medicare billions annually because Medicare people who receive electric wheelchairs tend to be healthier overall and suffer fewer injuries. The study found that the rate of people with broken hips was significantly lower when individuals had electric wheelchairs.

Over the past three to five years, the electric wheelchair industry and Medicare have battled over who should qualify for this type of medical equipment and how much Medicare should pay for those that receive it. Last year, Medicare finally released what seems to be the new directive for pricing and eligibility for electric wheelchairs. Below is a brief overview.

Medicare Electric Wheelchair Eligibility

To be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair through Medicare a person must have what is considered a daily living activity need for it and that need must be inside the home. Medicare currently does not covered electric wheelchairs or scooters for people who exclusively need them outside the home.

Daily living activities include feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting and so on. What does this really mean? It means that a person must need the chair to get around inside the home for at least one of these activities. Medicare will only consider the person eligible if he or she cannot conduct these specific daily living requirements with the use of a manual wheelchair, cane, walker or freely.

How Much will an Electric Wheelchair Cost?

The pricing for electric wheelchairs differs throughout the country. Whatever the allowable price is in your area, Medicare will typically pay for 80 percent of the cost. The remaining copayment may be picked up by your supplemental Medicare insurance if you have one. If you do not, you are responsible for the remaining 20 percent (normally between $1,200 and up).

How Do I Get an Electric Wheelchair?

You need to first ask your doctor if you are eligible and if you meet the minimum Medicare requirements. If your doctor says you do, then contact a medical equipment supply company (either a local one or a national one like The Scooter Store or Hoveround). In addition to Thursday-through-Saturday dinners, Verdant is hosting "Wine Wednesdays," every Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. These events will feature special presentations of Owner- or Barrel-Select wines, paired with the restaurants gourmet fare in an informal setting where guests can eat, talk and sample fine food and wine in comfort.

Helena Darling, Verdants executive chef, founded Ashlands Prima Vera restaurant in the early 90s, then sold it in 1997. "I am delighted to be working with Duane Smith to provide our region and visiting tourists with a new and different fine-dining experience," said Darling.

"Im going to ensure that Verdant will be known for its fresh, local ingredients; sophisticated, textured flavors and creative menu options featuring regional favorites. Our cooking is really inspired by what weve got growing outside the kitchen door and the wide variety of very high quality locally-grown organic produce and meat." Darlings style incorporates the use of fresh and rare herbs, like Saffron; flavored oils, like truffle and walnut oils; and aged, balsamic vinegars in the preparation of roasted, grilled and baked meat and fish entrees. Her desserts add Northwest touches to her classic European sensibilities to produce menu items like: "Meyer Lemon Custard Cake with Blackberry Puree and Orange Cream Cookie" and "Housemade Spumoni Bombe with Strawberry, Pistachio and Chocolate Ice Creams served with Balsamic Syrup and Anise Biscotti."

After years of promoting and enjoying all of Ashlands fine-dining establishments, owner Duane Smith thought it was time to offer area residents and Inn guests his own vision of Rogue Valley Haut Cuisine. "Ive always wanted to try my hand at the restaurant business," said Smith, who has lived in Ashland for almost 40 years. "I remember when the Chateaulin first opened 34 years ago. I hope that Verdant will join the top-tier of fine restaurants in our region which is home to some of the West Coasts finest dining."

Restaurant Verdant plans to look at expanding their operating days and hours during the height of the tourist season in Ashland. "It will depend on our success and the demand for our services," said Smith. "We want to keep all of our options open to best serve our customers."
